Ursa Conculium (2018) by Blake Tyson was composed for the composer’s friend and colleague, Justin Cook, for his final doctoral recital at the University of North Texas. The musical theme is derived from the initials of the University of Central Arkansas and their mascot, the UCA Bears. By utilizing German, Italian, and English musical note names, the theme spells out C-C-A-B-E-D-Eb.

Morgen! (Op. 27, No. 4) by Richard Strauss (1864-1949), arranged by bass trombonist Ilan Morgenstern, is a setting of a poem by John Henry Mackay. Originally composed as an art song, the work is a meditation on hope. This arrangement highlights the lyrical and expressive capabilities of the trombone in conjunction with articulation and colors of the vibraphone.

Karakurenai (2009) by Andy Akiho (b. 1979) is a vibrant and rhythmically complex work for solo percussion. The title, which translates to “crimson” or “deep red” in Japanese. Utilizing unique setups, Karakurenai showcases the virtuosity and percussive color of the instrument.

Soundings (2013) by James Naigus (b. 1987) was originally written for horn. This version is for trombone and pre-recorded, electronically designed accompaniment. The piece explores the unique timbral possibilities of this instrumentation, blending the lyrical, acoustic qualities of the trombone with the varied electronic landscapes. As the title suggests, the work investigates various “soundings”—resonant and sonorous textures—creating an engaging dialogue between the live performer and the synthesized accompaniment that highlights the modern versatility of the trombone.

Fool’s Fire (2025) by Katherine Bergman (b. 1984) is inspired by the landscape of South Louisiana and the Cajun folklore surrounding feu follet—orbs of light that flicker above the marsh. Often described as the souls of unbaptized children, these lights are said to wander and weave through the wetlands. Bergman’s music captures this imagery, evoking the mysterious atmosphere of the marsh and the playful, mischievous nature of the feu follet as they dance through the landscape. Premiered at the Hilliard Art Museum, Lafayette, LA by Slide&Strike.

Immigrant Journey (2026) by Amy Dunker (b. 1964) is a musical reflection on the complex experiences of those who leave their homes in search of a new life. Dunker’s writing employs harmonic language that invites listeners to contemplate the universal themes of displacement, resilience, and the enduring human spirit.

Dedicated to those who leave behind homes, families, languages, and livelihoods in search of safety, opportunity, and hope. Celebrating those who find compassion and sympathy for those needing help. 

A Minute of News (1998) is a high-energy percussion solo that captures the frantic, relentless pace of a fast-breaking news cycle. The playful snare drum work is designed to mirror the chaotic and attention-grabbing nature of modern media.

Pair Up (2024) by Myles Wright (b. 1978) explores the collaborative relationship between trombone and percussion. The work utilizes the distinct sonic profiles of trombone and marimba to create a unified, rhythmic interplay, resulting in a dialogue that highlights the versatility of both instruments.

Slide and Strike is a duo featuring trombonist Benjamin Yates and percussionist Brett Landry, both faculty at the University of Louisiana School of Music. Blending the expressive warmth of the trombone with the rhythmic versatility of percussion, the ensemble explores a wide range of musical styles, from classical and contemporary works to cross-genre collaborations. Slide and Strike performances showcase both technical artistry and engaging musical dialogue, creating programs that are accessible for diverse audiences. Through innovative programming, educational outreach, and collaborative projects, Slide and Strike expands the possibilities of the trombone and percussion duo, offering audiences a unique and memorable concert experience.
