October 9, 2014: Visiting Artist Series I: Mike McCurdy and Christa Van Alstine
Our debut as an organization is coming up quickly! For the first Versipel concert, we feature two dynamic New York-based performers – Mike McCurdy, percussion (Mantra Percussion) and Christa Van Alstine, clarinet/bass clarinet (Red Light New Music, Hotel Elefant, Wet Ink Ensemble) who will perform world premieres by Louisiana composers Philip Schuessler and Kari Besharse written specifically for this concert along with other works from their repertoire. Members of The Versipel Collective will also join our visiting performers on several pieces.

December 4, 2014: Versipel Collective: Homegrown New Music
Versipel Collective plays music by Louisiana composers!
In support of a mission to present high-quality, innovative performances of contemporary classical music to the New Orleans area, Versipel New Music’s second concert explores the unique compositional voices emerging from Louisiana today. Homegrown New Music will feature the works of living Louisiana composers performed by the Versipel Collective, a group of fierce and dedicated local new music performers.
This diverse program will feature 21st century chamber music by Louisiana-based composers Stephen David Beck, Colin Kemper, Rick Snow, Mendel Lee, Greg Robin, Stephen Suber, Vanissa Law, Elliot Downey and Nick Hwang.
Cafe Istanbul 7:00 pm.
January 27, 2015: Visiting Artist Series II: Iktus Duo
In late January, we will host two more visiting performers from New York City. The Iktus Duo (Chris Graham, percussion and Hristina Blagoeva, flute) will present a program of contemporary music including a world premiere by Versipel Assistant Director, Philip Schuessler.
Café Istanbul, 8:00 pm.
April, 3 2015: Visiting Artist Series III: Mabel Kwan
For our next event, we are absolutely stoked to bring in Chicago-based pianist Mabel Kwan, for her New Orleans debut concert. A champion of living composers, Ms. Kwan has performed throughout the world, both as a soloist and a member of Ensemble Dal Niente.
This concert, presented in conjunction with FOCI Arts, will showcase several technically challenging works of the 21st century in contrast with the thorny contrapuntal music of the Baroque period. Ms. Kwan will perform works by three local composers – Ray Evanoff, Philip Schuessler and Kari Besharse, along with selections by Frescobaldi, Bach and Froberger and a work by Boston-based composer Evan Johnson.
Café Istanbul, 8:00 pm.
April, 29 2015: Versipel Collective: Versipel on the EDGE
We’re planning a late night show at an alternative venue that will feature music on the very fringes of “classical” music. Graphic scores, improvisation, electronics, video, oh my!
Three works from our call for scores will be featured – Toccata by Joo Won Park for found objects and live computer processing, Alan Tormey’s fixed media work Theories of Place, and Indaco by Girolamo Deraco for flute, clarinet and percussion. The program will also include works by Christian Wolff, Cat Hope and Jay Batzner.
Zeitgeist Multi-disciplinary Arts Center, 9:00 pm.
