Soundscapes I

On March 26th, Versipel New Music presents Soundscapes I, the first in an ongoing  series of programs designed to immerse the audience in specific places, times, and environments with electro-acoustic and instrumental sonic landscapes.

Gabriella Smith’s Anthozoa takes us on a journey through the coral reef off the coast of French Polynesia. John Luther Adams’s The Light Within is inspired by a moment of reverie while interacting with artist James Turrell’s site-specific installation Skyspaces, Meeting. Kari Besharse’s Exozoology I: Flight and Song opens up our imagination to the possibility of sounds of otherworldly creatures beyond the familiar. Joanna Bailie’s set of Artificial Environments is a guided walk through the processes and techniques used in making the pieces themselves. Karen Power’s Human Nature uses field recordings with live improvisation to weave connections between naturally occurring sonic events and more constructed musical worlds.

The works  together highlight an environmental message, by immersing the listener in environments and soundscapes, we gain a deeper, fuller appreciation of the world around us and what we are at risk of losing.
