Season 3: 2016-2017

Season 3: 2016-2017

November 10, 2016: Versipel Collective I: Pulses and Lines

The opening concert of Versipel New Music’s season brings to life works bound together by pulse, motion, and texture. From the palpable momentum of Timo Andres’s “Safe Travels” and Zack Browning’s “Moonthrust” to the haunting textures of Philip Glass’s “Metamorphosis” and the curiously abstract sound world of John Cage’s “Ryoanji”, each work marks time in its own unique way, pointing the way forward yet embracing its sound from one exquisite moment to the next. The concert will also feature a solo violin piece by Chinese composer Ziyang Wen, chosen  from Versipel’s Call for Scores.

January 24, 2017: Visiting Artist Series I: In the Shade

Join Versipel New Music for a special event featuring Australian cellist Geoffrey Gartner in a solo recital that juxtaposes a masterpiece of the Baroque with the multi-sensory music of the present. This event features the world premiere of an interactive installation for cello and electronics by New Orleans composer Rick Snow entitled In the Shade. During this performance, the sonorous timbres of the cello are blended in real-time with three, spatially disposed resonant sound sculptures, filling the unique space of the Marigny Opera House. Audience members are invited to walk around the hall, immersing themselves in shifting, reverberant soundscapes. With evocative lighting to match, this will truly be a feast for the senses!

This immersive experience will be complemented by a performance of Bach’s Suite IV for unaccompanied cello, placing the past and present in stark relief.
